About Lee Ann
I am a registered board-certified art therapist who has been providing services to children, teens and adults for the last 10 years. I favor a Humanistic counseling approach, but I am generally eclectic in working with clients, understanding that therapy should be tailored to a client's needs and goals.
As a graduate student, I began investigating the psychosocial side of diabetes, ultimately focusing my graduate research on the use of art therapy with type 1 diabetic adolescents who do not follow their treatment regimens. Since then, I have become an advocate for integrating behavioral health services into diabetes care. Emotional well-being is the foundation for good, life-long diabetes management, and I believe art therapy is a powerful and effective means of achieving that.
My professional passion grew from personal experience, having had type 1 diabetes since 1978. I have been interviewed about my personal experience with diabetes for local, national, and international TV, radio, internet, and print media. I am also the author of a diabetes blog, an active member of the Diabetes Online Community, and I contributed the Introduction to the recently published, "No-Sugar Added Poetry: A Diabetes Poetry Book". As a practicing artist, I believe that creative expression is a path to embracing life with chronic illness.
I have a BFA in ceramics and painting & drawing from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and an MA in Art Therapy from Drexel University. I am a professional member of the American Art Therapy Association, Delaware Valley Art Therapy Association, Art Therapy Alliance, and American Diabetes Association.
