ART THERAPY for CHILDREN & TEENS with TYPE 1 DIABETES
*Pre-Approval & Pre-Registration Required*
This art therapy group is for school-aged children and teens with type 1 diabetes. It is an opportunity to have fun, learn and share with peers who can relate to life with diabetes.
Groups will start with a brief check-in to see how each participant is doing. After a structured art task, each member will have the opportunity to process and discuss their final art product, and exchange thoughts and feedback with peers.
Each art task is designed to inspire exploration of issues related to life with diabetes. Art tasks and topics are tailored to meet the needs of each age bracket. Some of the topics include managing diabetes in social situations, identifying personal strengths that make managing diabetes easier, and assuming increased responsibility for diabetes management, among many others.
All children must be pre-approved in order to make sure each child gets the maximum benefit of attending, and to ensure the integrity of the group and its purpose. Once approved, sign-up and confirmation via phone or email for each group session is required due to limited space.
No talent or previous experience is required to have fun with visual expression. All art materials are provided, however sometimes we recycle diabetes trash into art objects. Your child might be asked to bring used test strips, empty supply boxes (infusion sets, syringes, etc.), and related items. Also, donated magazines for collage projects are always appreciated, specifically diabetes, children’s and teens’ magazines.
School-Aged Children & Teens: 9 & Younger, 10 & Older
Cost: $20 for a 75-minute group session, or $100 for a series of 6 groups in advance
Please call or email for more information, or to schedule a 30-minute screening session.
